CoinMarketCap Admits Leak of Users’ Email Addresses in Massive Data Breach
Crypto data aggregator CoinMarketCap is currently in the eye of the storm for a data leak incident. According to recent reports, more than 3 million email addresses belonging to its users were leaked and are currently being traded online. The reports pointed out that the leak had occurred on October 12.
However, CoinMarketCap was not privy to the incident until it was discovered that the addresses were being exchanged for money on several hacking platforms. Upon this discovery, CoinMarketCap admitted that the compromise had occurred while pointing out that the passwords to the affected accounts were however not leaked.
Despite that the passwords of the affected emails were not part of the attack, it still poses a great measure of risk to users considering that the parties behind the hack could send phishing links to their email addresses amongst other forms of cybettack.
CoinMarketCap has distanced itself from facilitating the attack as it claims that none of its site’s servers was breached. As of press time, the cause of the attack was unknown.
The crypto space has witnessed several data leaks and hacks in recent times, including those that saw millions of dollars carted away by bad actors. Back in September, leading US-based crypto exchange, Coinbase became a victim after users complained that the value of their crypto holdings was being tampered with.
